Ghosts of Vietnam

Vietnam & Iraq:

1. Neither was our country or war to fight. The Iraqis have to solve their own 6 sided mess.

2. Al-Queda cannot, by its very nature, govern Iraq (can you imagine them doing anything as mundane as collecting taxes and picking up the garbage?).

3. Even most Sunnis oppose Al-Queda. We need to get out of the way so the Arab world can clearly see that Al-Queda does not speak for them.

4. After 30 years, we are an active trading partner with Vietnam, which is growing even faster than China. It seems impossible now that Iraq could be in that position 30 years hence, but the same was said in 1975 about Vietnam.

5. Iraq's Shiites are historically and virulently opposed to Iran, and nationalistic. It may be convenient for them to team up against the Great Satan (us) now, but when we leave they'll return to happily slitting each other's throats.

6. We have no right to Iraqi oil. We need to get over this and move on to energy independence.

7. Our military is coming apart at the seams. We cannot afford the bodies or the cost of a never ending war.

8. We need to redirect our resources to protecting ourselves and our true allies - Iraq is neither.

9. We are seen as occupiers in Iraq - just look at all the polls there, and the statements of Iraqi citizens and all major groups. We need to stop being the targets and start being the detached observers.

10. We need to start worrying about the Kurds moving on Turkey, which IS an ally, or even worse, Turkey and Iran getting together to oppose the Kurds. Won't THAT put us in a pickle?

These are my top ten reasons for getting out of Iraq now.
