First off, Goldman mentions we're lacking any future major league starters above high A ball, yet he wants to trade for a low A ball pitcher. Next year we'll have Wang and Pettitte as definites in the rotation, with Mussina still under contract (depending on what the Yankees decide to do with him once the year is done), as well as Hughes and Clippard who can fill those 4 and 5 spots. Then we have Rasner, who can be a pretty decent option as a 5th starter if someone goes down, and Karstens who can have some decent spot starts here and there. Humberto Sanchez could be back by midseason next year (well, wishful thinking), and also by that time Chamberlain and Kennedy may be major league ready as well, since they'll both probably end THIS year at AA (as did Hughes and Clippard last year, also Kennedy recently got promoted to AA already). On top of that, there are some decent back end pitchers on the market next year, so our pitching is in pretty good shape. A-rod is a big piece of the puzzle, and there's no reason to trade him. We basically just need a first baseman, and possibly another outfielder, but Melky should get a shot to start next year. Our biggest concerns are what to do with Damon and Giambi, cause they're both fragile and aren't moveable by trade. Also, I wouldn't call a 22 year old in AAA having a decent year so far a fluke (eric duncan).
So yeah, we don't have too many holes to fill, and like someone said, we won't get fair value for trading A-rod, and trading him would leave a huge hole in our lineup. It wouldn't be worth trading A-rod for a good 3b and 1b, especially since we should be able to fill 1b through other means and keep A-rod, plus I don't know of a team that would be willing to do that (the players would have to be proven, major leaguers for it to make any sense at all, not "prospects")
