Train to JFK May Lose to Second Avenue Line
in response to reader comment: Light rail preferable to subways and money saved could help outer borough transit

Submitted by Brian Staples, Jun 6, 2007 15:43

Mr. Spitz, while I always advocate all forms of electric rail service including light rail, knowing what I do from my education and professional experience subway (heavy rail, metro, etc.) is certainly the best method of bringing rail access to an area that has incredibly congested subway lines nearby. While light rail would be nice in those areas it is certainly best to focus on the heart of the NY Metropolitan Area's urban core Manhattan and build outwards after the 7 has been extended hopefully to Chelsea Piers as the current plans for track building indicate the possibility of and after the Second Avenue Subway is completely funded for all 4 phases. The outer boroughs certainly need better and increased rail transit I agree with you but these are projects that are long overdue. In the future these projects will be/are being addressed. With any luck an agreement between the City, NJ, NY, NJ Transit, MTA, and the Port Authority will come into being allowing for a new Bayonne Bridge and an extension of the Hudson Bergen Light Rail into Staten Island will be a start towards adding better rail transportation in the Outer Boroughs.
