My heart is sadden and harden upon the news and charges brought against Gen. Vang Pao. Has anybody read any recent articles or history on the Hmong in Laos lately? They are still being slaughtered like animals each and every day by the Lao government. The Hmong-Americans cannot even travel there safely. Each year, a handful of Hmong-Americans who traveled back to their homeland of Laos for vacations are carried back home to the U.S. in a casket. Those who are not so lucky are never found and simply vanished from the face of the earth. What the General is doing is to free his people from persecutions, rapes, and injustice killings by the Lao government since 1975, after the U.S. abandoned the Hmong when the Hmong were the allies who fought side by side with U.S. soldiers during the "Secret War" in Laos. The United States is a defender of freedom and anti-communists. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" The words of the mighty woman with a torch who stands proudly on the shore of New York symbolizing freedom to the world. The General is the last hope for the Hmong suffering in Laos--even if war seems the answer. If the General is convicted based on the allegations brought against him, then the United States has failed those who pray for hopes, refuge, and freedom.
