I don't think that "The Sopranos" has ever catered to what fans expected. That's what made it so unpredictable and addictive. When something really momentous (such as Adriana's death) does occur, it isn't glorified, so much as shown the way it "would really happen" (No slow motion running and such garbage.) Personally I find this style to be more interesting and more than a little disturbing in its authenticity.
In the end, "The Sopranos" will go on... we just won't be there to watch. These fictional characters move forward without us. They have a life of their own, and to expect them to wrap up that life, neatly, for us is just silly. Anyone who expected the show to wrapped up in a nice little bundle, with a bow on top, wasn't paying attention to every preceding epsiode! In some ways it did end with finality... the show started and ended with Tony's starting and finally ending therapy, for example. But in others, it didn't. How can you expect to know how their life will end, unless you watch until the end? Since that isn't going to happen, you have to expect that their life continues as we step away from the picture.
I think this fact was made clear when the last line on the show was Journey's music saying "Don't Stop!" Because, it never really does, does it?
