Losing In Advance

Why do my fellow Israelis have such a lust for giving up land and surrendering? They can explain all the reasons why it should not be done, and then at the end say it should be done all the same.

Here Mr. Halkin, after outlining the follies of land for "peace" with Syria, says that we should give Syria PART of the Golan. I'll grant that it may be slightly less bad than giving them the whole thing, but that does not make it good! Syria will still be in a better position militarily, and it will be no less motivated to attack us (the reason Syria was our enemy in our first place was not because we had one plot of land or another, but because we had any - merely giving up bits and pieces will not change that). In fact, after witnessing this latest instance of weakness, it could only be emboldened.

When he says that the eastern Golan "protects Damascus from possible Israeli attack," I can't help rubbing my eyes in disbelief. Now, Israel is not an aggressor, and Syria knows that. We have only, and would only attack Syria in self-defense, so any measure that protects Syria from us would only be worth anything precisely if Syria did want to attack us. Really, this is too much!

I suggest that Mr. Halkin and other Israelis stop turning their neighbors' couches inside out in search of every measly half a speck of an excuse to hawk out our real estate. Start looking for a spine instead. Start making it so that the actions of our genocidal neighbors have consequences - when they lose their land to us they should NEVER get it back. For when they know that they can lose a war but not be diminished, what's to stop them from waging another one?
