In December of 2000, I met then Mayor of Jerusalem Ehud Olmert as part of a group. Some of his comments then included the following: "I think PM Barak is a brave man. He is brave because he thinks he has the right to give away our land. This land was given to the Jews by G-d, and no one else. As long as I am mayor of Jerusalem, Jerusalem will stay undivided and in the hands of the Jews."
The reason I remember these statements is because I wrote them down. I was impressed with Mayor Olmert. I commented to the group that Ehud Olmert would be a great PM for Israel. I was wrong.
Olmert has done an about face. The face of Mayor Olmert is not the face of PM Olmert. This saddens me...and makes me wonder: what is it about the office of PM that makes the strongest supporters of Israel change? Why do they then want to give it away? PM Olmert is a disappointment to me.
