Assembly Set To Approve Gay Marriage

Submitted by Danny M. Francis, Jun 19, 2007 12:11

More and more Americans are concerned about this issue since the media keep the spotlight on it...but, the bottom line is this no matter how one's view on gay marriage is: let the voters decide.

Granted, we are a representative democracy and our representatives speak for us, as they in the NYS Assembly are about to do - but do they actually speak for the majority, even though they are in the majority? I don't think so.

I say put critically important issues like this (and abortion and guns and more taxes, or money for private schools, etc) to the vote of the people. I know democracy cannot run by open ballot all the time, but critical issues need the people's personal touch I believe. Politics is one thing and we all understand it - but critical issues of our time demand the electorate wade in.

Just my view - I'm sure there are others in the opposite direction. But, that too is what democracy is all about, isn't it? I believe it is.
