I attended the Univ. of Pennsylvania (Ivy League), as did my wife. We were both in Army ROTC. Penn is one of the last Ivy schools to offer it, and even Penn has managed to exile it to Drexel. If the "elite" are really convinced that no one with any brains would join ROTC, maybe they should let the students decide for themsleves. Instead they just banish ROTC and then say see no one wants to join. My oldest daughter went to Wellesley College and was in Air Force ROTC (she is now on active duty). In order to be in the program she had to go to MIT (as did students from Harvard). My youngest daughter was just accepted to Tulane and she too plans to join ROTC. I am a retired US Army officer now working as a Middle School teacher. One of my co-workers husbands is in Afghanistan and just volunteered to extend his tour. A friend's son (wealthy) volunteered to return to Iraq as a Marine armored platoon leader (he is a captain). While they are not going to do it for free, it is the mission not the money that motivates them. People like Rangel and Kerry might be better served by actually getting to know some people in uniform, rather than making uninformed statements about them. Unfortunately the attitude of all too many was exemplified by the Wellesley administration when they asked students not to display the American flag after 9/11 because it might offend some people.
