You can't let irrational fear of oil prices from abroad drive foreign policy; in fact the very thing that would ameliorate that issue - exploration in Alaska - has been axed repeatedly by the Democrats. The Democrats have created yet another dependence owed to them but this time all of us are victims; they have created an environment where this inordinate reliance on foreign oil can fester. By demonising 'big oil' (whose profits only average about 10%, which is pretty standard across many industries), they are sentencing all Americans to be part of this new 'oil welfare state' where we are totally beholden to foreign countries and their (potentially) capricious whims regarding our oil supply and we lose the capacity and ability to fend for ourselves. When OPEC says they'll supply more oil, we cheer and when they determine that prices are too low, they reduce the supply; we are completely at their mercy as it now stands, and we have largely the Democrats to blame for this.
Alternative fuels are a nice Polly Anna idea, but not currently viable as a full blown solution to replace our oil needs. While we do further research and investigation we CAN explore in Alaska with little effect on the environment and we SHOULD make sure that oil companies are not punished for supplying us with the bogeyman of the environmental movement - oil.
If the Democrats want to look no further for funding of this little alternative fuel escapade, they can start by reducing pork, but they show no sign of doing it. To the contrary, it is now destined to be enshrined as part of Congressional politics for the next two years.
