While I agree with you that there are many other issues out there that need attention, I disagree with you that Marriage is exclusively a religious institution. In order for a marriage to be of any social consequence it must be recognized by the state. If that were not the case, then all of the private marriages that have occurred over the years between gay men and lesbians would automatically be recognized as legally binding. Or, conversely, marriages held in churches would only be valid in that particular religion, and not in society in general. Just wanted to throw that out there.
