State Brownfield Program Is Boondoggle, Critics Say

Submitted by Linda Shaw, Jun 22, 2007 13:47

I am an environmental attorney from upstate NY who works for developers throughout the state. I am attempting to organize a group fo developers to fight back at all of the bad press being created in regard to the brownfield program. What is getting lost in all the recent news stories is that no one was redeveloping these sites before this law. Developers do not have to clean up other people's contaminated real estate. Can't you see through your own article. All the executive wants to do is to stop the success of this private sector program to use the money for projects they want to do. Very good projects occurred in the first 54 projects on sites that would never have been redeveloped. If you look at the numbers in your articel multiple them by 5 to see how much new development occurred on contaminated real easte. Since most of the real was developed int commercial and industrial reuse and much of that was upstate, many jobs were created. I prepared an editorial on the real numbers two weeks ago in response to an article in the Times Union and the article was not picked up. If you would like to see it, please call at 585-414-3122
