The Body Politic

You seem to come to some pretty quick decisions yourself Mr. Rapold. You say Moore idolizes the given countries because of their free universal healthcare systems but doesn't look at the problems in those countries. What would those problems be? It seems to me that you're suggesting a "We're better than you" attitude which is typical amongst most Americans. Paternalism is one of the major characteristics of the US. As a Canadian, I think that we are very fortunate to live in a system with more social services. You need only look at the $5000CDN per year bill for university I pay to see where I'm coming from. In addition, if you look at the standards in social-democratic countries, they are much higher than the US. As Moore points out, many parts of the US are worse off than third-world countries

The gap between rich and poor in the US is enormous and it is this gap that social services try to lessen because at any given time, any person can face a set-back beyond their control. As citizens, we have a duty to help each other out when in need. What's nonsensical is to pay thousands of dollars to private corporations for medical care when you can have a universally free system. Governments are in place to ensure that people get the necessities of life. Corporations are in place solely to make a profit. Sadly, the line differentiating these two entities no longer exists in the United States.
