The Body Politic

"Cuba's health care comes at the price of other freedoms, for example, and all those happily socialized Frenchmen have just elected the liberal market reformer Nicolas Sarkozy."

I could understand if you claimed that Cuba's health care came at the price of other goods and services, but I don't see what it has to do with freedoms, such as gambling, drugs, obscenity, prostitution, religion, criticizing the government, peaceful protest, or running for political office and voting freely.

Nicolas Sarkozy just barely defeated his socialist rival, and almost every analyst agrees that was mostly because of his promises to use to police to keep the unemployed Algerian immigrants from bothering the whites, and not because of his promises to reform France's generous public services.
