Let Religious New Yorkers Be Heard

Submitted by Chuck Anziulewicz, Jun 23, 2007 09:25

This whole notion that the Gay community is on one side of this issue and the "religious" community is on the other is absurd. Gay people are no less people of faith than Straight. And there are plenty of churches that are welcoming of supporting of Gay individuals and committed couples.

Fact is, the term "marriage" doesn't even OCCUR in the Consitituion of the United States. Laws affecting the institution of marriage have always been evolving on a state-by-state basis, but there is no Constitutional "right" to marriage, even for heterosexual couples. However, the Constitution DOES provide for equal protection under the law.

Considering that the federal government has a vested interest in this issue for the purposes of income taxes and social security benefits, ultimately one of two things will inevitably occur: Either the Supreme Court will decide that Gay and Straight couples must be treated equally, or a Constitutional amendment will have to be passed eliminating Gay couples from legal protection. Given that more and more Americans are supportive of their Gay friends, co-workers, and family members, it seems increasingly unlikely the latter will occur.
