The comments on this article are mostly debating the rights of gays to marry and therefore entirely off topic. The issues that are discussed in the article would be a problem, if the legislation was writing anti-gay laws as well.

The disturbing point of the article is that our elected officials decided not to consult the public on a major hot-button issue. Whether the religious right (or the public) is pro or against gay marriage is immaterial to the article. Why is it, that elected officials are writing legislation on a hot button issue and decide to circumvent the public hearings? In what other areas are elected officials advancing special interests to the detriment of the public.
