Think very carefully about what Mr. Rangel said, and then compare it to what Timothy Kane said. You will see that Kane is switching the subject. This is a very clever trick, popular among people who want to avoid the truth.
Rangel: "No bright young individual wants to fight just because of a bonus ... most all of them come from communities of very, very high unemployment."
In other words -- the problem isn't that stupid people join the army. The army has tests and standards to prevent that. Our troops are bright. You think otherwise, you try to occupy a country full of hostiles for three years with fewer than 3,000 combat deaths! On the whole, our troops are smarter and better-equipped than in any previous war.
The problem is that smart but poor people join the army. You don't see the "economically advantaged" of this country signing up for basic training, or going to West Point, or even signing up for the reserves and going through OCS. The rich people don't want to risk their lives because they don't have to.
Mr. Rangel is suggesting that we level the playing field. Make people of all races and classes share the burden of defending our country! Freedom isn't free, and there is no reason why any class of people in this country should get a free ride, regardless of their intelligence, education or skin color.
Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't deserve to call himself a patriot.
