I will in no way argue that there aren't bright, intelligent, and educated people in the military. I have known many of them. My father was career military himself but was forced into it by Vietnam over 40 years ago. Most of my high school friends joined to take advantage of the GI bill so they could afford to go to college because they couldn't apply for any other assistance and wouldn't be able to afford it any other way.
I feel it isn't the undereducated that are suffering through this but those who wish to better themselves and are unable to get the assistance they need any other way. I feel that the US military system is taking advantage of those whom they have promised bonuses, college education, useful job skills, and only at the cost of 1 weekend a month and two weeks a year. How many promises have been broken to these young men and women? The skills my mother learned while in the AIr National Guard were completely useless to her outside of the military because she did not have diplomas or national or state certifications (despite her years of practical use and knowledge). My father had 20 years of experience in the Air Force in mulitple disciplines but was unable to find a job except with another gov't facility (who were the only people that recognized his job experience in the military).
I know that there are those who truly believe that they are serving and protecting their country by joining the military. I would not dare to assume that any one type holds a majority over the other. I just hope that those who are joining now go in with full awareness of what they are getting into without the hype and false truths.
