Touching Up Bowling Green

To clarify some points made in Mr. Gardner's column of June 26th, the design of the British Memorial Garden at Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan is wholly by British landscape architects Julian and Isabel Bannerman. Its realization is being overseen by the firm of Matthews Nielsen.

Additionally, the shape of the park, a small triangle, dictated the contours of the footprint, which is a county map of Great Britain, hand carved by noted sculptor Simon Verity. One can walk from Cornwall to Scotland within the space of 3/4 of an acre.

The park was designed to be a refuge from the City; a place for reflection as well as recreation. It is intended to honor the 67 British victims of 9/11 and celebrate Anglo-American friendship.

As the British Memorial Garden is still in the first phase of landscaping, it is perhaps unfair to judge it at this stage. When completed later this year, this little park will live up to its aspirations.
