The Body Politic

As an American born and educated in Canada, having worked as a health care practitioner in both countries and having experienced "hands on" health care in the UK (public health care too), I am well positionned to give an informed perspective and critique on both this article and the movie.

I agree with the "As a Canadien" commentary, as well as with other commentaries. I get comments from American family members about "Bad" "nationalized" health care systems, who have yet to set foot in those countries and have not experienced the care there (Canada, France, UK, etc.), yet when they experience poor care or services here, they don't even realize it. They just assume doctor knows best...

To go further: the USA offers the best of what medical care technology has to offer, as well as excellent services-- but few lucky ones can enjoy this, on some rare occasion and for a crazy price of getting this privilege. Mr. Moore and others usually miss this crucial point: for profit medical care is meant to bring in profits ($) to insurance, providers (doctors, therapists, technicians, nurses, etc.) and pharmaceutical companies. Prevention and good "health care" is not the end goal. Profit is.

By the way, perhaps the movie's "reality bites" disturbe the author so much because such bad treatment just couldn't be found elsewhere in "civilized" countries of the world. I guess it hurts his pro status quo position, just as it will many politicians, insurance, doctors, hospitals and so on.
