I'm not sure what I think about a Bloomberg run. I would love to see a third party candidate win, and I think Bloomberg is a brilliant person, a solid leader, but if he runs it could get scary..... If Hillary is the nominee, Republicans hate her SO MUCH. More than Satan himself. They would vote in droves to see to it she is not elected, and I don't think most republicans are going to particularly cozy up to Bloomberg when they remember Rudy as their 9/11 "hero" mayor (side note: the guy was just mayor at a really bad time, he didn't DO anything unusual). What would very well happen is that the republicans will stay relatively united behind Rudy, and the democrats get all split up amongst Bloomberg and Hillary. I know myself, a pretty strong democrat would be very tempted to vote for Bloomberg if he were running a legitimate campaign. It's not even a matter of whether or not he's a viable candidate, but its whether or not he's able to grab votes from both sides - which he has to do in order to win. My concern is that Republicans really have no reason to vote for him, he's mostly liberal, and as a New Yorker I know we can distinguish him as a better politician than Rudy, but Americans across the country may not see the difference. They'll just remember the Time Magazine Person of The Year cover and a "tower of strength".
Republicans have this ridiculous party loyalty, which makes them so frustrating to deal with - Democrats are definitely more all over the place, and willing to switch around from candidate to candidate, which is how a guy like Schwarzenegger could win in California. If he were a Democrat trying to pull in Republicans, forget it - those guys can't look past the party labels. Democrats will, which I think makes them smarter voters in some ways, but also threatens their ability to maintain party control.
In the end Bloomberg is a guy I wish would win, and if there's a way he could - i think the country would benefit, especially over Hillary... That being said, having ANOTHER Republican would be tragic for this nation, and Romney or Guliani or any of these guys pretty much suck big time. I think reasonably minded people in this nation need to stay united; we can't afford to be so rushed to get a third party candidate, we (being liberals) have a rare opportunity for an easy election of controlling both congress and the presidency. We're being given a golden opportunity to undo the horrors of the last eight years. It would be so terrible to see that opportunity ruined because of the thrill of shooting for a third party candidate, and pretending that democrats and republicans are the same thing - because they're not.
