Cell Phone Holdouts: It's Not 1990 Anymore

Submitted by Bob Nolan, Jun 29, 2007 05:39

You nailed it when you said rudeness and cell phones go together. All of this began in the 80's with annoying yuppies and their beepers. The "I'm so important, I can't be out of contact with my people" syndrome. At the time my philosophy was that only 3 sets of people really needed beepers; doctors, emergency workers and drug dealers. When cell phones started getting popular I just changed the object of my scorn. I'm not a holdout, have had a cell for over a dozen years, but carry it mostly because I travel rural roads where it's comforting to know I can get help if my vehicle breaks down. My cell is never on. I'm not that damned important that I have to be reached right now, while I'm driving, eating, shopping, visiting or whatever. My teen-aged son can't call me 24/7 and he manages quite well, thank you. Once in the blue moon I do use it to text my lucky case guess on Deal or No Deal. It's great you can send pics to Aunt Harriett, we've all done it. I'm not living in total technology denial but a little consideration (basic politeness) goes a long way. Doubt I'll live long enough to see it, but I can dream!

Bob
