Four of my firends and I were pulled over in 1998 by plain-clothed detectives in Norfolk VA, guns to our heads and ordered to seat on the floor while out vehicle was ransacked. We were all sailors attached to Norfolk Naval Station, and we were all black. The policemen were all white. After their 10-minute search of the vehicle and finding nothing, they told us that they trailed us aw we made several stops and thought we were peddling drugs. They left before we could identify them. Since that day, I wake everyday thanking God for saving my life for doing what an ordinary American should do. As a blackman, I used to go out at night or drive the streets fearing running into an armed robber - having my car snatched or my money stolen. Now, I have to walk the streets fearing being killed by the police in a hell of gunfire. Am I not better off with the armed robber?
