I, too, am reminded of that Yankee team. However, if I remember correctly, there was another factor besides age and injuries that helped do that team in. The manager, Johnny Keane, who had piloted the Cardinals over the Yanks the previous October, was not a clubhouse favorite. Some of it, I'm sure, was excuse making on the part of an underachieving team, but subsequent appraisals of his handling of the ballclub that year support the contention that he was not up tp the job.

I think there's very little doubt that these guys are still playing hard for Torre, and that he is still liked and respected by the players. Were that not the case, I'd also favor letting him go. As it is, anyone can have a down year.
