Mankind has searched for the truth since the dawn of history. He has sought it within himself and in the minds of others - the latter usually in the "revealed" knowledge recorded in ancient texts. Not until the full flowering of the scientific method in the 18th/19th centuries has he had a method which promises to provide him with a truth compatible with his reason. The hallmark of science is its ability to self correct - its humility - if one can attribute this virtue to a method, whatever one might say about the character of individual practitioners. Methinks a little applied humility in other areas of human endeavor would not go amiss.
