Latin Mass May Damage Catholic-Jewish Relations

Submitted by Michael, Jul 4, 2007 14:19

I don't mean to offend, but I think that the Anti-Defamation League is out of line. To suggest that a "Tridentine Renewal" will somehow create an anti-Semitic atmosphere within the Church is both insensitive and ridiculous. I am an adult convert to the Roman Catholic Church. In the seventeen years that I've been a Catholic, I have witnessed and been a part of several variations in practice, from charismatics to "reformers" to traditionalists and everything in between. I've listened to thousands of homilies and post-Mass conversations. Not even once have I heard a comment that could be interpreted as anti-Semitic or disparaging of the Jews (except for Mel Gibson's over-publicized drunken raving, which was about as indicative of Catholic thought and sentiment as ultra-orthodox Zionism is indicative of Judaic thought and sentiment.) So far, I haven't found hatred of any given race--including the descendants of Abraham--enshrined as a virtue, practice or precept in any catechism or similar clarification of the faith. Anti-Semitism has been roundly denounced as an evil on numerous occasions by several Church authorities. We have all learned from the atrocity of the Holocaust. Why does the ADL seem to think that an optional return to the traditional Latin Mass will somehow change that? Why do they respond with ominous and threatening-sounding statements like "we will be watching very closesly"? Do Catholics try to dictate how Jews run their synagogues? Why, then, does the ADL seem to think they have a right to dictate the form of the Mass? I'm personally deeply offended by that, and hope the ADL has the decency to apologize.
