"If a young fellow has an option of having a decent career, or joining the Army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would not be in Iraq,"
I personally know several college graduates who volunteered to serve their country's interests, out of love for their country and the desire to protect it. Any one of these young soldiers could have passed on the military and gotten a cushy office job.
They didn't have to sign up, but chose to put their lives on the line and serve their country rather than helping themselves to a "decent career". What an insult to our men and women in uniform. Like they didn't choose a "decent career" by serving their country.
"If there's anyone who believes these youngsters want to fight, as the Pentagon and some generals have said, you can just forget about it. No bright young individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits. And most all of them come from communities of very, very high unemployment," the congressman said.
I do agree with Rangel on one thing, that no "bright young individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits".
They want to fight, and they VOLUNTEER to fight to protect a country they love.
