NHS Opened the Door

Submitted by Rionn Fears Malechem, Jul 6, 2007 18:04

This column seems to lack any sort of logical cohesion. As near as I can tell, the point is that letting Muslims participate in civil society is a threat to Britain. Is that a correct reading? But, you make some bizarre statements along the way.

The NHS is the nearest thing to a religion that the British now have. ... No politician dares to reform the NHS, which is still run by its white-coated medical priesthood.

You'd have to work harder to make this point. Does the NHS have a creation myth? Rites of worship? What makes it a religion? Wasn't there a massive reform of the NHS two years ago? Is it only since then that the politicians have cold feet?

You further mention "Al Qaeda's declared strategy of recruiting highly educated professionals." I've declared that strategy myself. But, to some extent, can't we just trust the fact that highly educated professionals are highly educated professionals to protect us? They seem like a pretty hard bunch to talk into mass murder, unless you occupy their country and kill their family and neighbors.

That Britain has to import doctors from overseas probably has something to do with their success at science education in the lower forms. The Financial Times ranked England below Malta and Indonesia in education system quality last October -- perhaps it's just not the best place to get one's physicians.
