Hospital Merger Could Free 10 Acres on Island

Another option to getting on/off the island would be to install a pedistrian/bike-friendly elevator up the side of the Queensboro Bridge so that people could walk or bike halfway across the bridge to Manhattan (or, less frequently, Queens). Roosevelt Island has the peculiar attribute of being connected directly for foot, bike and car traffic only to Queens, where most people don't commute to or from, and disconnected from Manhattan, where people usually need to go. A Queensboro bridge elevator would be a Green alternative and would provide a much needed emergency escape route should there be another failure of the tramway as there was a couple of years ago. With improved bike lanes coming off the Queensboro bridge and the eventual completion of the Greenway on the east side past the U.N. people could have a nice ride to upper and lower Manhattan directly from Roosevelt Island.
