One should show up and try an volunteer in NYC or the metro area (obviously do not disclose you are a reporter). The organizations are led often by ego maniacal self-imporant people that have no clue on how to manage human beings. Friends and brown heads (way beyond brown noses) abound. Trying to volunteer often is a waste of time and the organizations are usually just interested in getting a "donation" from you and not bother with you giving your time. Mybe in St. Paul the egos are smaller and they treat people better.
