Six months ago my wife visited our NHS doctor complaining of prolonged indigestion. She had made the appointment in the morning, and was seen that day.
She was referred for tests, but when the symptoms got worse she was immediately admitted to hospital for urgent tests. There was no wait, a bed was found for her straight away, and the tests were carried out within 3 days.
She was diagnosed with bowel cancer by a brilliant consultant (who just happened to be Pakistani), and had surgery for the condition within a week.
She has now been given the all clear, is back at work, and is on a 5 year monitoring program run by the hospital where she had her surgery.
She had all this treatment without having to rely on expensive and restrictive insurance, nor did we have to pay thousand of pounds from our savings.
That is a real experience of Social medicine, not some 'bloke in the pub' comment cobbled together from Daily Mail headlines.
