I like the take in this article, even though I believe we may have some different ideas. No problem with that, as far as I'm concerned.
have had a problem for many years that America is not American, but rather still a part of the British empire.
My favorite President ( related to your Teddy R) said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
To start with, today Americans fear.
Also, I don't understand why we would make English the only language we officially speak. Why don't we pride ourselves in speaking "Pan American" -- meaning our children would learn English. Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Itallian. I lived in Greece for two years; their students must learn four languages to graduate. Why would our scholls require fewer languages than Greece, when we are the ones who advertise ourselves as a successful "melting pot" of cultures.
(I peronally think it's more accurate to call it a jigsaw puzzle, but that's a different topic.)
I don't understand why we pledge to our flag instead of our Constitution. I would have school children pledge to the preamble of the Constitution every morning. We are about that Constitution. Beautiful as the flag is, we are a different nation, and what makes us a different nation is our Constitution.
I'll stop there, but my point is, I think America would be better off if we stopped being part of the British Empire, and actually brought a MORE perfect union to the table of nations.
Thanks for listening.
(btw, I teach college English :)
