Americanizing America

I wholeheartedly agree with your article. I am an American and consider myself patriotic. I love my country and yearn to see her strong and vibrant and confident like we were in the 1980's. But I fear our "Americanism" is being diluted by the constant barage of immigration into this country. It is not the immigration itself which is diluting "Americanism" but the increasing tendency of immigrants to prefer to maintain their nativism rather than to assimilate into American society and adopt American culture and way of life as their own. I live in Miami where the large South American community makes little or no effort to learn American culture and way of life, not to mention the english language. They have brought their respective countries with them and have planted their flag, and it is NOT the American flag. While I understand their need to maintain some of their own culture I fear that their disinterest in assimilating into the American way of life will so severly dilute "Americanism" in this country that we will lose our identity. The strength of our country throughout our history has always been our attachment and love for our country and countrymen. Do these immigrants have that attachment and love for America? Do they love this country or do they just love what this country gives to them? Are they willing to GIVE to this country as much or more than they take? These are legitimate questiions and we have to do a better job at assimilating and educating these immigrants and stop making it so easy for them to avoid learning our culture and our way of life. And for their part, the immigrants have to show a willingness to assimilate, a desire to learn the American way of life and lastly, a pride and love for their newly adopted country.
