Actually Mark lots of people want to be doctors in Britain - lots apply to medical schools but the Treasury restricts the places and has a monopsony with only the NHS providing clinical training places. Visas for foreign doctors started in 2006......now the Government has taken direct control of medical training from the doctors and has cut down the time so that we now have two years supply of doctors looking for training posts this year just as the budget freeze cuts places.

This is why we expect to have 12000+ unemployed doctors-in-training by 1st August when all contracts expire - The Witching Hour - mind you over 33% new nurses are unemployed and 67% physios graduating - and midwives are being laid off.

One thing Government cannot do is manpower planning - the British Government is run entirely by The Treasury the source of most disasters in British history from under-equipped soldiers to dispiriting hospitals and cheap and shoddy public buildings.

The British Treasury is avaricious in its demands for money and parsimonious in spending it on worthwhile objects - "penny wise and pound foolish"
