Unemployment at the big 3 is not because of CAFE, it is because the big three are building cars people don't want to buy. Opposing CAFE delays the inevitable, while forcing the big 3 to innovate (through something like CAFE) might actually give them a chance to become competitive again in a few years. Are the executives at Ford, GM and Chrysler so focussed on the short term they don't care about long term survival?
