If Coughlin Gets Hook, Giants Have Nice Options in '08

Submitted by Andy, Jul 17, 2007 10:50

By citing the fans in his piece, Mr. Smith apparently thinks the fans should be considered when management makes coaching decisions. Which fans is he talking about?

Is he talking about the millions of Steelers fans who wanted to fire Bill Cowher after finishing 6-10 in 1999? Or the millions more Steelers fans who wanted to fire Cowher when he finished 6-10 again in 2003? Or the Steelers fans who were calling shows in New York to suggest Cowher's replacement after the Steelers lost their third game in a row in 2005 to fall to 7-5?

Or perhaps Mr. Smith is referring to the millions of Browns, Chiefs, and Chargers fans who wanted to fire Marty Schottenheimer after one of his many playoff disasters?

Or maybe Mr. Smith remembers the millions of fans and New York media who had Bill Parcells fired after his disastrous first season (1983) You remember, the one where he picked Scott Brunner over Phil Simms as his starting quarterback. Parcells did have the Giants in the playoffs in his second season. So did Tom Coughlin, with a division championship and a better record (11-5). Oh yeah, Coughlin did it with a quarterback in his first full year as a starter and scored more points (422) than any Giants team in 42 years, which includes all the years Parcells coached the team. Parcells was the last Giants coach to lead the team to the playoffs in two consecutive years until.....Tom Coughlin.

The Rooney family did the right thing. They didn't let the mob run the team. They were patient. They had a good coach and they stayed with him. The Giants should stay with Coughlin. He's a good football coach. Just ask Bill Parcells.
