China Quietly Muscles In on the Organic Food Market

Submitted by Kelly, Jul 19, 2007 08:16

This is ridiculous. I don't want to buy "organic" products at my Whole Foods store only to find out that some things are being imported from China. Why not support the local farmers, and those that have standards set in place to be upheld by US gov't agencies? We don't know what is in our food...even food that is labeled as from the US...not all ingredients are from the US (e.g. the Veggie Booty recall). This is ridiculous. I feel like reading labels doesn't matter anymore...there seems to be no truth in labeling, no oversight. I had a dog that became very ill on the recalled pet food months ago. The food I was buying was all natural, made in the US. They lied. I'm still so angry that it took a catastrophe like the dog food recall to find out that the US is being poisoned by dangerous chemicals & ingredients in foods that are imported to our country & not checked by our agencies for safety.

I'd like to see a label put on every food product that indicates the country of origin. This is not difficult people...they did this with low fat, fat free products...they did this with products that contain soy or peanuts, etc...this can be done...but I'm sure many companies will be scrambling to lobby against the new labels for fear that we Americans may discover that the expensive "organic", natural products we were buying from them contain harmful substances from other countries.

In addition, I think it would be in the best interest of our local natural & organic grocery stores to not import products from other countries...I think they will lose shoppers becuase of this. When I shop at those stores, I want to be confident that I am supporting local farms & farmers, that I am purchasing healthy products, and that I get what I am paying for...otherwise don't look for me in those stores...I'll go somewhere else.
