Israel's Time of Deja Vu

Submitted by Russell Cohen, Nov 30, 2006 06:07

Based on past experience, a truce is likely to be honoured more by the Israeli side than the Palestinian, resulting in further Israeli casualties. Post-Oslo, these deaths were ironically referred to as the "price for peace"!

Arms smuggling from the Sinai through the Philadelphia corridor is likely to escalate, resulting in the balance of terror in Gaza tipping in favour of Palestinian terrorist groups. The Egyptians are unlikely to take serious steps to limit this smuggling, although they may use it an excuse to introduce more security forces into the Sinai.

The truce will be used by Palestinian terrorists to regroup and rebuild their capabilities, rather than as a first stage to a full peace treaty.

Hamas may well use the new-found respectability gained by "accepting" a truce to further erode support for boycott of the PA.

Offering terrorist groups a truce simply gives these murderous bands a status and legitimacy they do not deserve.

The truce is also likely to result in the release of prisoners with blood on their hands. Once again, past experience indicates that they are likely to return to their old ways.
