Hamptons Mulls Its Own Taxes on Congestion

Submitted by Bob Lunder, Jul 24, 2007 08:16

I have spent the last 3 summers full-time in Westhampton. We are friends with several families in East Hampton but find it too difficult to accept their invitation and driveback and forth for a visit. The best solution is the LIRR. My proposed solution would be for the the towns of East and Southhampton to hire trains from the moribund railroad and run at least every two hours in both directions. If regular rail shuttle service were available people would gravitate to it. The east-west traffic would be reduced by an amount that would allow better traffic flow on SR27. Local minibuses could be used for the last 4-5 miles from the train stations.

Governor Spitzer will hardly come up with any proposals for this jewel of the state. The solution will have to come from County, Town and Villages.
