Strictly speaking the US captured a number of Islands from Japan.
The Northern Mariana's Islands remain sovereign US territory to this day.
Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and the Republic of Palau were administered by the United States after World War II. All are now independent, but remain tied to the US through the Compact of Free Association.
