Vouchers and tax credits should be available in every state for all students. Even Al Gore, no friend of education choice, admitted during the 2000 presidential campaign that if he were an inner city parent, he would favor vouchers.
There is no ideologically sound reason, and certainly no practical one, to continue throwing billions of dollars at government school systems. As much as half the funding is eaten up by bureaucracy in some school systems, notably those of the nation's four or five largest cities. Ideologically, the rights of parents to directly control their own children's education is in line with the founding principles of our nation and must be recognized. Most, if not all, the progressive-era's "reshape society for good" initiatives have now been shown to be failures. Large, one-size-fits-all government monopoly education is the most egregious.
It is past time to give freedom of choice back to parents.
