Big Deadline Move Puts Yankee Future at Risk

Have enjoyed your work at YES for a long time and generally agree with your view of the Yankee universe, especially your sardonic take on events occurring therein. I was heartened to see your chastising of Torre regarding his treatment of Edwar Ramirez. I was at the game last Friday when Torre brought him in for his humiliation after not having pitched for 12 days. I was so angry, I just got up and left (yes, the lop-sided score and a dinner at my favorite Italian restaurant also had something to do with it). But I do think you overstat the idea that the Yankees have no positional prospects. Yes, Eric Duncan sadly has regressed, and Brett Gardner's value is as a 4th outfielder/utility/base stealer guy. But waht about Jose Tabata who has consistently batted over .300 in high A ball and he has not turned 19 yet (I know his power is lagging but he IS 18)? AndAction Jackson has performed remarkably well since his promotion to Tampa and he is only 20. Even younger are some of the international signings, most notably Jesus Monero who at 17 is starting off well with the GCL Yankees and has awesome power. Agree that most of the young talent is in pitching (and the depth of it is amazing), but we have a few positional guys and hopefully more as a result of the recent draft. By the way, I have seen Edwar pitch on repeated occasions. He makes batters shake their heads going back to the dugout. And he struck out the side in his first outing with the Yankees. After that, in his post-game interview, Torre snidely-- I never thought I'd use that adverb in the same sentence with the word "Torre"-- downplayed it, before exiling him to non-use. I am still angry about it. In that vein, I would appreciate your taking on the subject of whether Torre should stay beyond this yar in a future PB column or here. As for me, I have loved Torre for years despite the Jeff Weaver in 2003 and pitching a rehabbing El Duque instead of Mussina on regular rest in the 2004 ALCS moves. But in my opinion, it is time for him to retire, win or lose. Otherwise, I may be in need of institutionalization. Thanks for the good work.

Seems strange to omit Tabata, Jackson and Cervelli from your discussion. You also refer to Teixeira as a pitcher in... [MORE]
