Senator Obama is right. You cannot keep away from your enemies and hope to influence them. In fact, if you are to make fundamental changes in international policy, the best approach is to talk to your enemies. The famous Nelson Mandela did this when he was president of South Africa: He at one time appointed his arch-enemy, opposition leader Mangosutsu Buthelezi to act as president when he traveled abroad.

The late President Ronald Reagan faced the former Russian leader Mikhael Gorbachev and told him face to face to demolish the Berlin Wall. Is the wall still standing? That culminated in the end of the Cold war. History is replete with examples where engagement rather than disengagement works.
