Governor Spitzer is a very bright, articulate and well intended chief executive officer. However, he must come to grips with the fact that governing the State of New York entails the fine art of compromise and negotiation in working with the Legislature. As Attorney General, he built a "Sheriff of Wall Street" persona that served him well in addressing the lack of transparency and business ethics. But, as Governor, he has governed with an autocratic and heavy handed management approach in getting the Legislature to do things his way or otherwise implying that they will pay a price. One, including Spitzer, does not tranform or reform State government in a vacuum or by themselves The notion that everthing changes on day one clearly protrayed him as a novice who does not quite understand that before you reform anything, you must first understand how things work or don't work before you change anything. Reforming the culture of State Government, at best, is a multi-year endeavor and can only be achieved in colloboration with the Legislature as business partners. Governor Spitzer ought to use troopergate to reinvent himself and establish better relations with the Legislature for the sake of all New Yorkers.
