Ms. Shlaes brings out the inevitable result of our now retired citizens depriving their greatgrandchildren of innovative medical cures. Socialism does not accomplish any such expensive, research projects. Free markets, only, do.

Pray, tell, what good is a cure for HIV--when it is granted to a chosen few? Annihilation of a problem demands all out war, not political restraints.

Then we have the growing culture of dependency. Even those who have assets--yet reach a certain legal age --automatically obtain taxpayer paid medical benefits. (Should our current system remain in effect, when Bill Gates reaches 65; he will be eligible for Medicare, as well as Social Security.) And, as Ms. Shlaes suggested--the retired population continually looks for more bargains...

WAKE UP, AMERICA. Pursuant to the late, great Milton Friedman: "There is no free lunch".
