Teachers' Salaries Could Rise 7.1% Under New Deal

Hello,

The nyc teacher salary schedule (starting salary $42,512 increases slowly to $ 87,911 after 23 years) guarantees a focus on tenure rather than quality and comensurate compensation. The pension formula also rewards longevity and seniority (.0167 factor increases to .0200 after 20 years). Boston, which offers a more competitive teacher compensation package for beginning teachers, offers a short 9 step salary schedule and an age neutral pension formula.

Teachers expect the reward of an $87,911 senior salary, having toiled for many years with paltry salaries. Without the very generous senior salary ($87,911) and consequent boosts to average salary and pension, a teaching career offers embarrassingly low compensation. Very likely, teacher quality degrades as low paid 10 year teachers tranform into highly paid 30 year teachers with senority.

Let's hope the salary increase comes with a little more respect for the teachers as well. [MORE]
