Blaming the problems in the US on teachers and administrators does little good. After spending 16 years as a high school administrator I have some amazing stories I could write about. The teaching profession, like any othe profession--doctors, lawyers, garbage men, mechanics, etc has its share of individuals who should be doing something else. However, over the years the vast majority of teachers I have known and supervised worked hard and cared for their students. Many times it is impossible to undue in six hours what happens the other 18 hours. For example I had one student living with his fathers girlfriend, while he was in prison for DUI, who moved in another man. The boy, with a friend, to get even broke down the door and stole the marijuana stored in the home. Many home lives are impossible and school is the farthest from their mind. Add in the other influences---drugs, tv, music etc and school becomes irrelevant to the student. They know no other life and have no role models at home. Teachers are human and can only do so much. Many families are a disaster and the students are raising the parents.
