Senator Stevens's Igloo

Submitted by Phillip Johnston, Aug 2, 2007 17:26

Ted Stevens is the GOP's counterpart to West Virginia's Democratic senator, Robert Byrd. Neither one ever saw a piece of pork-barrel spending he didn't like--as long as it was for his own state.

The editorial is right on target: The GOP was empowered in 1994 to get rid of the corruption and cronyism for which the Democrats had become emblematic. Now it is the Republicans--far too many of them, anyway--who have decided that true happiness can be found by "do[ing] well" instead of "do[ing] good," in the editorial's own words.
