Torre Seems Terrified of Changing Ways

All good points, Steve. As you know, you're preaching to the choir for this reader. However, I think it's been revealed, especially with the naked intent of the Proctor deal, that Cashman's responsibility for the on-going travesty that is Joe Torre's tenure 2002-to-date has been truly underestimated. Cashman's a smart guy, he knows to the bone everything you've discussed about Torre's twilight zone managerial quirks, but his greater fear seems to be the spectre of someone else as manager...someone like Lou Piniella, whom he believes shares the sentiments about him that Don Zimmer rather ungraciously expressed a few months ago--"Cashman's not a baseball guy. He's not someone we baseball guys take seriously." So, better to keep the sleep-walking Torre in place than to risk being pushed out of the GM chair by a derisive Piniella. Lost in all of this is what's best for the team on the field. That's why, with some regret because I think he's a bright guy, I would endorse getting rid of both Torre and Cashman. Of course, apres moi, le deluge. I'm not too confident that outside turning to a 70 year olf Gene Michael, George and his sons would have the first clue on who to hire as GM.
