The ‘Burden' of Making DUMBO a Historic District

Submitted by Sheryl Buchholtz, Aug 3, 2007 08:14

The growth of the area has in many instances been done thru the rehabing of old factory buildings. Their height and designs complement the Brooklyn Bridge area while allowing for reasonable growth. The Fulton Ferry and DUMBO distristics are listed as one of the most endangered waterfront visitas in the United States. Currently, developers have anxious to buy land and destroy older buildings without regard to the surrounding histoic architecture or available pubic services. Instead of building bigger and higher with huge density issues, we should preserve some of the older beauty and respet the graciousness of historic buildings that make of the district unique. Without landmark status, inappropraite use and designs of buildings will take over the New York waterfront and destroy a signifcant part of the history of our city.
